About the project/intervention:

This Project of “Rural hygiene & sanitation” was carried out by some of our students as their Final semester project under the guidance and supervision of Sri Ranju Mahanta , H.O.D i/c Civil Engineering Department , Nowgong Polytechnic, Nagaon Assam. According to National Sanitation Foundation of the USA, “Sanitation is a way of life. It is the quality of living that is expressed in clean home, clean firm, clean business, and clean community.’’ Sanitation covers the whole field of controlling the environment with a view to prevent disease and promote health. Hygiene is commonly known as cleanliness or conditions and practices that serve to promote or preserve health. Improved housing, improved nutrition and improved hygiene with improved access to safe water, sanitation are the essential components for the war against infectious diseases and bases for clean environment, socioeconomic development and sound public health. Inadequate sanitation has direct effect on health of individual, family, communities and nation as a whole. Simply, having sanitation facilities increases health well-being and economic productivity. Sanitation includes use of latrine, personal hygiene, clean surrounding, proper disposal of solid and liquid wastages and hygienic behavior. Toilet is taken as an essential and basic indicator of health and worldwide. Sanitation refers to public health conditions related to clean drinking water and adequate treatment and disposal of human excreta and sewage, Preventing human contact with feces part of sanitation. Sanitation systems aim to protect human health by providing a clean environment that will stop the transmission of disease. Sanitation includes four engineering infrastructure items: Excreta management system, Waste water management system, Solid waste management system and Drainage system of rain water. Lack of sanitation is very serious issue that is affecting most developing countries and counties in transition. The importance of the isolation of excreta and waste lies in an effort to prevent disease which can be transmitted through human waste, which afflict both developed countries as well as developing countries to different degrees. After visiting different villages in Nagaon district we have chosen Kahiguri village, in the district of Nagaon, under Raha LAC where some schedule tribes poor people are living within a very unhygienic conditions. They are economically very backward and use to earn their livelihood by daily wage and some agricultural activities . Almost more than 70 to 100 families habituate for open defecation due to lack of any form of Latrine facilities. Myself Sri Ranju Mahanta , H.O.D i/c Civil Engineering Department , Nowgong Polytechnic with the cooperation of few students, decided to provide a LOW COST LATRIN for the needy people of the proposed village from our end. In this regard we are very happy to state that total numbers of village we have taken are two -1) Kahiguri and 2) Hatimura No.1, both in Nagaon district of Assam, for this project by two students groups formed by H.O.D i/c Civil Engineering Nowgong Polytechnic. Our aim was not only to provide a free latrine (Double Pit), but at the same time to transfer the low cost technology to the rural people.

Source of Fund / Funding support:

No fund from any sources. Completely self-finance for the benefit of the people.

Outcome and Impact:

please include quantitative indicators wherever Available. Safe Private or Community toilet system is very essential for all. It keeps the environment clean and hygienic. In India, lack of toilets affects mostly women and girls who are even have to dropped from schools. Low hygienic conditions increase the morbidity and mortality. Over and above, poor child development due to unhygienic conditions will affect our physical and mental growth of future generation. Although public health is governmental responsibility, but our effort is to provide affordable technics for rural people and also to help those who are economically very poor. After the completion of construction of said Low Cost Latrine, people start using it leaving open defecation. As a result, the people basically female are mostly benefitted. Some of the female user told us , how they were facing problems during rainy season and incidence of diarrhea occurrence in their locality, before leaving open defecation . Moreover other residences of the village who are having some form of latrine facilities, got relief from the dirty practice followed by these people. As per feedback taken from the villagers , some excreta related diseases also reducing to some extent among the communities who left the habit of open defecation .

Challenges faced, if any:

Illiteracy is the main challenge we faced in the village. Most of the villagers are not literate even though there is government run school. No skilled masons and technicians are available in the villages.

Plan for scale-up or mainstream implementation: yes/No.( If yes share details):

Yes, we are planning to organized some awareness program not only in this village, but some similar type of other villages also, in the field of Safe drinking water, use of plastic and its safe disposal technics.
